Romania has joined the Plastic Pirates
Welcome aboard Romania!

Plastic Pirates unstoppable: Romania has officially joined the Plastic Pirates initiative – a warm welcome to our newest member! The team of UBB Cluj serves as the main contact point for Romanian schools and youth groups aiming to launch a Plastic Pirates sampling. Starting in April 2025, students from Cluj-Napoca collect scientific data at local rivers, making a valuable contribution to the growing European database on plastic pollution.

Plastic Pirates General Assembly in Brussels – shaping the future of the initiative

On April 8 and 9, the Plastic Pirates crew gathered in Brussels for their – at least for now – final General Assembly, as the Horizon Europe project “Plastic Pirates – Go Europe!” officially ends in May 2025. At the heart of the discussions was the path ahead for the initiative and the vision of a future Plastic Pirates network. The Plastic Pirates will continue to combat plastic pollution worldwide together with you!

Important information

As the Horizon Europe project “Plastic Pirates – Go Europe!” officially ends in May 2025, this will be the last newsletter for the time being. A huge thanks to everybody for the continued interest in the initiative!

Of course, the end of the Horizon Europe project doesn’t mean the end of the Plastic Pirates. The initiative will continue their activities beyond May 2025: You may still reach out to your national coordination team for information, material, booklets, guidance and support with organizing a Plastic Pirates sampling. Get in touch with us via email or through our website. The Plastic Pirates will continue to combat plastic pollution with you!

Currently, 14 European countries are actively taking part in Plastic Pirates' campaigns: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia and Spain.

Plastic Pirates - Go Europe! is a European CitizenScience campaign in which school classes and youth groups collect plastic samples at streams and rivers and document their results. The collected data is being analyzed by scientists.
